Airgas Lowers Fourth Quarter Earnings Guidance

RADNOR, PA – March 23, 2009 – Airgas, Inc. (NYSE: ARG) today lowered earnings guidance for its fourth quarter ending March 31, 2009. The Company now expects fully diluted earnings per share to be in the range of $0.64 to $0.67 for the fourth quarter and $3.07 to $3.10 for the full year, and reiterates that prevailing economic conditions offer limited visibility into future sales and earnings, which should be taken into consideration when evaluating the Company’s guidance. The previously announced guidance was $0.73 to $0.76 per share for the fourth quarter and $3.16 to $3.19 for the full year.

Did Races Rev Up Local Economy?

SEBRING - In this recessionary economy, local business owners are taking anything they can get, and that certainly includes race week.

Two years ago, motels were filled all the way to Bowling Green, 45 miles away. This year, Reed's Motel in Avon Park required, but did not always get, a five-day guaranteed stay from its customers during race week.

"We got pretty full," said Manager Tami Lott. "The only reason why we have a couple of rooms now is that the Pastorelli team - they won't be in the final race."

Airgas at PITTCON 2009

At the recent PITTCON event, Airgas held technical suite sessions and unveiled its new specialty gas reference guide.
The largest distributor of industrial, medical, and specialty gases, and hardgoods, such as welding equipment and supplies, attended the Pittsburgh conference in Chicago last week.

Greener pastures in store for refrigerants

The current trend in automotive refrigerants can be summed up as this: everything's new and nothing's new.

The automotive industry is gearing up for a replacement for the environmentally unfriendly R-134a, but no new alternative formulas have been created since last year when we reported on this chemical category.

The frontrunner for replacing R-134a refrigerant appears to be HFO-1234yf, a single-component refrigerant with a much lower global warming potential (GWP) than R-134a.

"You're dealing with tremendous economic problems. I think it's going to give people a bit of an excuse to slow things down," says Jay Kestenbaum, senior vice president, product management for Airgas Refrigerants, Inc. "Incomes are down, profits are down, so how fast can you push someone to make a change. You're looking at a product that will be 10 to 15 times the multiple of R-134a. It's a big price difference."

Graybar earns top distributor spot on Fortune list

St. Louis-based electrical distributor Graybar earned the top spot on Fortune magazine’s breakout list of the most admired diversified wholesalers in the country. The list is part of Fortune’s “Most Admired Companies” list, in which Apple took top honors.

Four other industrial distributors made the top 10 in the Wholesalers: Diversified category. W.W. Grainger ranked second; Airgas ranked fourth; Motion Industries’ parent company Genuine Parts Co. ranked fifth; and electrical/industrial distributor Wesco International took the number 10 spot.

Graybar and Wesco International ranked seventh and fifth, respectively, on INDUSTRIAL DISTRIBUTION’s 2008 Top 10 Electrical Distributors list. W.W. Grainger, Airgas and Motion Industries are among the largest industrial distributors in the country, taking top spots on ID’s 2008 Big 50 list.

Specialty gas company plans to build distribution plant in Elkhart

Airgas Great Lakes Inc. has plans to build an industrial gas fill/distribution plant on property in Banks Industrial Park, plot No. 7, in northeast Elkhart. The future site is located off County Road 6 on the northeast corner of Northland Drive and Cooper.

Airgas Inc. is the largest U.S. distributor of industrial, medical and specialty gases and related hardgoods, such as welding equipment and supplies.

It also is the third-largest U.S. distributor of safety products, the largest U.S. producer of nitrous oxide and dry ice, the largest liquid carbon dioxide producer in the Southeast and a leading distributor of process chemicals, refrigerants and ammonia products.
